Hearing Loss And Teens

Remember when you were a teenager and your parents would call you? You didn’t answer and when confronted you lied and said that you didn’t hear them calling? You know you did…

These days doctors are saying that teens really might not be hearing as well as they could and the culprit; ear buds and iPods. There is no conclusive evidence that the ear buds alone are the exact reason but they hypothesize it could be.

Teen hearing loss was studied by Dr. Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Most of the hearing loss that was detected was slight however, the longer they are exposed to the possible causes the worse it can become. There are headsets that come with preset volumes. If you can hear what the person is listening to then it is too loud. Parents you are allowed to dictate what you kids listen to and how loud it is. If they don’t like the rules, take the device.

    Hey Tom!

What I don’t get is that it took the accomplishment of an official research paper to convince people that wearing earphones will bring about hearing loss. Didn’t they see this coming? Oh well . . .

P.S.: Yes, I still have my email from back then. :D And now that you mentioned it, I too am wondering how they figured out the memory span of goldfishes. :P

This doesn’t really surprise me, being only just out of my teens. My hearing has gotten worse over the years, and I am one of those blasted kids who listens to music way too loud. Although, being in a band for five years in highschool probably didn’t help either. In either case, us “youngins” are pretty silly when it comes to our music…hopefully when I have kids I’ll know better.

Yep, it’s the earphones on full-blast.
I’m actually a singer so my ears are a little hypersensitive, which is why I rarely use earphones. I just can’t understand how some can stand listening to the damn thing when I can hear what he’s listening to 3 feet away. EARPHONES ARE NOT STEREOS. :|
Good to be here again Tom!
