Community Networking Meme

Creating a post every day, every other day or even once a week can be a daunting task. We are being pulled in many directions by friends and family, work, stress, fatigue, school, children, writer’s block, fear and the list goes on. Everyone who blogs has their own network of people who have visited and sometimes commented. That is your network, your personal blogging community.

Most times a blogger’s personal community of visitors and commentary stick to their own network. That means they do not interact with the personal community of other bloggers. In other words the people who visit your blog will not visit my blog just because you do. People coming to your blog will not necessarily visit the sites on your blogroll. So, everyone has their separate little network.

I’m not trying to change that, it’s just a fact of life that there are cliques even in the blogging community. What I was thinking though, is a community blog post. Before you click out of this post thinking I’m crazy, here me out… I just learned that there is a name to what I am proposing. It’s called a meme, (pronounced ‘meem’). A meme is contagious content that spreads quickly throughout the Internet and gets the attention of many web users especially on social networks like Facebook. As a matter of fact, a meme spread through Facebook last year. Females were posting the color of the bra and panties and none of us males had any idea what the colors meant. Some of us guys are still without an idea!

I want with your help, to create “meme-like” content passed on from one blogger to another blogger. The difference is I want this planned ahead of time so that as many bloggers who want to participate, can do so; all of us on the same day and time. The numbers could be in the thousands if everyone on your blogroll takes part, and everyone on their blogroll, and so on and so on.

Suppose I asked five bloggers to participate in a community post where we all came together to answer a questionnaire. You have ten bloggers that regularly visit your blog and you ask them to participate as well. They in turn ask their friends and visitors and so on and so on.

What we would need is a group of questions, a set day to post the comment and a cumulative list of all the blogs that are willing to participate. Everyone schedules the post for that day and time and there is a potential for hundreds if not thousands of new visitors for every blog on the list. New visitors, new readers and potentially new friends. I have chosen December 12th as the date because it is far enough away for all who want to participate, to do so and it gives you the ability to get your answers finished.

If you think this is worthwhile or just a fun idea, just repost this onto your blog as soon as possible in it’s entirety. Email everyone you know who has a blog and might also be interested in this. Ask each person who is a firm commitment to add their name and blog’s name to the master list. Everyone will need to include the list in it’s entirety to their post so everyone will have the same list on their site and everyone has an equal chance at exposure.

Rules of Participation

You must agree to the Community Network MeMe date which is December 12, 2010 at 12:01.
You must agree that on December 12th you will visit at least five blog links that you have never visited before and leave a comment on their responses (my site, Morning Erection, not included). Replace my site with your site.
You must answer each of the ten questions and with more than a simple yes or no response.
You must post the entire Master Meme Blog List of blogs participating regardless of how long the list may grow to be below your answered questions. (Please continuously update the list).
You must title your post the same as everyone else, “Community Network Meme”.
You must promote the Community Network Meme at least once on Facebook or some other form of social media, even if it is just your own blog to get even more bloggers to participate. Provide the link back to your original post so they can post this in its entirety, just like we did.
If you would like to participate and write the post in your language and not English, feel free to translate it or you could post both translations.
Make sure to either vote for or like the post appropriately.

Hey, I’m sort of a bit confused because:

    (1) All the comments above from 2010?! Am I logging into the right “update” page?

    (2) I checked out the Master Meme Blog List so I could copy it in readiness for posting it on my blog December 12 with the questions, but I don’t see my site listed – I’m http://www.wordsfallfrommyeyes.wordpress.com.

When this morning’s erection goes down, could you please give me some direction on the above. I don’t want to accidentally post last year’s blogroll – where’s this years?

Do you mind responding to my email wordsfallfrommyeyes@hotmail.com – I never click the ‘notify me of follow-up comments’ because I just can’t handle that much mail. I’d really appreciate your time, would like to do it right.

    Thanks.

    N’n.

  3. #4 by mitch@morphodesigns.com on December 11, 2010 - 10:34 PM

Hi Tom, I’ve uploaded the final master list, echoing your changes here. See you at midnight!

    Cheers,

    Mitch

Today is the day. let’s do this people.

    • #6 by Tom Baker on December 11, 2010 - 12:07 PM

Charles, it doesn’t start until midnight: 12:01. Also Sunday Stealing stole it from here. This is the point of origin, but don’t take down your answers. I am confident that people will be by tomorrow to see what you’ve written. Have a great weekend.

  5. #7 by Charles on December 10, 2010 - 9:45 PM

Thought I’d let you know I posted the article on my blog, tell me what you think.

    • #8 by Charles on December 11, 2010 - 12:16 PM

Sorry, wasn’t so sure if it was 12:01 on the 12th or 12:01 on the 13th. Thanks though.

  6. #9 by freshlittlehands on December 10, 2010 - 3:54 PM

    Tom! I want to participate!!

    • #10 by Tom Baker on December 10, 2010 - 4:49 PM

I’ve added your site to the master list. Do you have any questions about it?

      • #11 by freshlittlehands on December 11, 2010 - 5:12 AM

yes actually, i do. Do I simply post a link to this post on my blog & then on the 12th, answer the questions after I have looked at a minimum of 5 sites & commented?

        • #12 by Tom Baker on December 11, 2010 - 5:58 AM

You can either copy and paste the entire post onto your blog or just a link. Then schedule a post for 12:01 on Dec. 12th that has the answers to the ten questions on it. Also under your ten answers you will post the entire list of people participating and you can find that here. Anytime on the 12th you can visit the other 5 sites and leave comments. Feel free to visit more than five if you wish. Ask again if I can assist you further.

  7. #13 by Reymos on December 9, 2010 - 9:33 PM

Two more days to go and my Meme’s reply will be posted and shared to everyone…It is already entered and dated for 12 Dec posting. Watch out, I will be reading your responses as well.

    • #14 by Tom Baker on December 10, 2010 - 5:57 AM

I wish more people were involved but I am glad to see those involved so enthusiastic about it! Mine is ready to go too.

    • #15 by freshlittlehands on December 11, 2010 - 6:55 AM

      ohhh okay, got it! thanks!!

  8. #16 by deadpoet88 on December 9, 2010 - 8:22 AM

Sounds like a very interesting idea. I sure hope it works out! Never heard of anyone starting a meme before. I’ll definitely try to participate.

Thanks for visiting my blog by the way :) Glad you enjoyed it.

    • #17 by Tom Baker on December 9, 2010 - 8:25 AM

The more the merrier! I look forward to your responses to the questions and thank you for dropping by here.

    • #19 by Tom Baker on December 8, 2010 - 7:08 PM

Ileane, I’m glad you are joining in. So far we have almost 62 people.

  10. #20 by mitch@morphodesigns.com on December 7, 2010 - 11:31 PM

Hi Tom, just a heads-up. On the master list, judyism is missing an http://

I’m pasting the source HTML of the list into a text file and sprucing it up a bit before inserting it into my 12/12/10 post.
If anyone wants a copy, please leave a comment here or on my blog :)

Or Tom, did you plan to make a text file available for downloading? (hint hint)

    LOL

    Cheers,

    Mitch

    • #21 by Tom Baker on December 8, 2010 - 7:36 AM

Thank you Mitch. I will fix Judy’s URL. Since you are already sprucing the list up, I will let the people download from you because you probably will do a better job than I. I never thought of that idea. Thanks again Mitch, I appreciate the heads up.

  11. #22 by Wendy on December 2, 2010 - 4:59 PM

Hmmm interesting topic and interesting blog :D and interesting domain name :p but I’m not sure if I wanna try this one as I promised myself that this month is going to be all tech stuffs :D

    • #23 by Tom Baker on December 2, 2010 - 5:03 PM

You can always do it later. It doesn’t have to be Dec. 12th for everyone! Thanks for stopping by.

    • #24 by mitch@morphodesigns.com on December 8, 2010 - 1:02 PM

No Worries. I got a sneak peek at the Sunday Thieves’ posts – we’re going to have some fun :)
Let’s make this easy for everyone: if you could put this link at the top of this page and let folks know that they can actually download a 90% certified text file for pasting into their 12/12/10 posts, then they don’t have to request it from me.

      http://www.morphodesigns.com/visit/communitynetworkingmeme/

The bonus is that I’ll keep updating it until the last possible moment. Folks who have already posted their answers can edit their posts (I noticed that the Thieves don’t link to the list…but they didn’t reblog either, oh well!)

I only noticed a couple more issues: shumpynella is the url instead of ohsuchislife for Past to the Present; I could not decipher the url for FishLover.

      Cheers,

      Mitch

      • #25 by Tom Baker on December 8, 2010 - 7:11 PM

Mitch I will post the link to your list for all to grab. I will check on ‘fish’ link to see what the problem is but if I can’t find out any info from SStealing, I will also let you know.

        • #26 by mitch@morphodesigns.com on December 9, 2010 - 7:41 AM

Great! I’ll be over here whenever the email notification shows a new person, even if you haven’t had a chance to post an update. Now that the bulk of the list has been vetted, I can keep up.

Heh, thanks to Sunday Stealing, I’ve already read and commented on a few. It is a load of fun!

          Cheers,

          Mitch

          • #27 by Tom Baker on December 9, 2010 - 8:02 AM

Out of all the people who have responded positively to this meme idea, you have been a great support and I am looking forward to reading your responses. I am going to over the course of time, try to respond to everyone, but of course my five first! Thank you again Mitch.

  12. #28 by Mark - An Eerie Tapestry on November 28, 2010 - 7:47 AM

Oops. Thanks to Sunday Stealing, it seems my meme’s early (at least it saves me figuring out what timezone the 12:01 referred to). A good bunch of questions anyway.

    • #29 by Tom Baker on November 28, 2010 - 8:27 AM

Hey Mark, it’s okay. I’m glad there are people interested in the meme and the questions. Of course I would have liked for everyone to do it on Dec 12th their time, but I will visit Sunday Stealing again and add everyone involved to the master list regardless. Come back anytime!

  13. #30 by Lady Grinning Soul on November 27, 2010 - 6:17 PM

Hey – I’m sorry about posting my answers early… have a feeling there’s going to be quite a few of us, unless the Sunday Stealing people sort it out. For now I’m going to watch the Sunday Stealing site to see what they do, as I’m sure you get that there’s a community there that earns me more followers every week. Really wish I’d seen this first though! I’d love to take part in the real meme on 12th December. I’m going to try and find a way to sort this out. Anyway! Great idea. I’m going to add you to my blogroll and see what happens with Sunday Stealing.

    LGS xx

    • #31 by Tom Baker on November 27, 2010 - 6:47 PM

LadyGrinSoul, no need to apologize. You didn’t know. I am waiting for Sunday Stealing to respond to my comment asking them to specify the date. I enjoyed reading your responses. Really I’m happy people are participating. Some of the ideas I come up with baffle even me!

      Tom

  14. #32 by Judd Corizan on November 27, 2010 - 3:35 PM

Hi. We steal a great meme each and every Sunday. The one we stole this week was yours. We usually just mention where we first saw it, but we named this one after you. Also some other great meme sites: Saturday 9 (http://samanthasaturday9.blogspot.com, Rock ‘ Roll Fridays (http://jjatff.blogspot.com, Wednesday Wickedness (http://jjatww.blogspot.com) and Thursday Thunks (http://thursdaythunks.blogspot.com) Cheers!

    • #33 by Tom Baker on November 27, 2010 - 5:30 PM

Judd, I’m glad you are going to be a part of this and I saw the post on your site. Can you please let it be known that this particular meme is not to be posted until December 12th. Thanks. Tom

      • #34 by reymos on November 28, 2010 - 12:21 AM

Hi Judd…thanks for choosing my blogsite to be featured in your project… At first, I was thinking that this is only a joke because your blogsite address link is incorrect as written: sundaydaystealing.blogspot.com, instead of sundaystealing.blogspot.com. I think you wrote it here the same… Please check again because it is bit confusing. Anyway, I searched it thru google.

Im excited to find out how many bloggers out there will participate thru Sundaystealing and will boost the number of bloggers that will participate. Good luck Tom!

      • #35 by reymos on November 28, 2010 - 1:05 AM

Hi Tom, maybe you could come up with a possible list of blogs that somehow “you like most” after these bloggers posted their answers on the 12 Dec. A sort of “special recognition” for having written or answered the questions interestingly – may either give you facts or sense of humor. Everyone’s answers are unique but maybe thru your own personal judgement (as the originator of the meme), you can give us your own assessment… This is only a suggestion…

  15. #36 by The 16yearold Naive on November 26, 2010 - 6:26 PM

Hello! yes I am totally fine with it! Thank you for even giving time to read my blog haha , yes yes yes You have my permission ! :) have a greaaaaaat day.

    • #37 by Tom Baker on November 27, 2010 - 6:01 PM

Thanks. I have added it for the March Poetic License.

  16. #38 by rainboy on November 26, 2010 - 8:52 AM

love the idea…glad someone is thinking like this.

    • #39 by Tom Baker on November 26, 2010 - 9:04 AM

Thanks Rainboy, I hope you will also be a part of this!

  17. #40 by technogran1 on November 23, 2010 - 3:51 AM

I would love to join but I am still not sure what to do! When I was no LiveJournal eons ago, they used to do a lot of these meme’s on there and I never got the gist of it all then.

Sorry to be so thick but I am a senior with a CPU that badly needs renewing

    • #41 by Tom Baker on November 23, 2010 - 7:42 AM

Please do join in. Basically all you need to do is copy the ten questions from this post and answer them in a post on your site scheduled for December 12th. I’ve been to your site before replying to your comment and it is very interesting and funny! I will leave a comment later. Let me know if you are joining in with us!

      • #42 by technogran on November 23, 2010 - 9:17 AM

Yes I will join in and I get the bit about pasting the questions into my blog post. (I would do this via Windows Live Writer which I use for all of my blogs) but when do I give my answers? Now or on December the 12th? How do I get my readers to join in? (if I have any that is!) What if there’s a question that I don’t want to answer? etc etc and ad infinitum or whatever……

  18. #43 by southwindtrails on November 21, 2010 - 6:53 PM

I like this idea and would like to take part. Like Cherlyn only a couple of people out of my handful of readers blog themselves so I will do my best to promote this on facebook. Sounds like this is going to be fun!

    • #44 by Tom Baker on November 22, 2010 - 8:35 AM

It doesn’t matter how many people you get to participate if you at least promote it once. The important thing is that you are a part of it.

  19. #45 by reymos on November 21, 2010 - 4:59 AM

Im joining… I got the info thru Carl’s website: Iron Cook: American. Good luck to everyone! Rey Ramos

    • #46 by Tom Baker on November 21, 2010 - 7:13 AM

I’ve added you to the master list and I hope you have fun with this. I also hope more people join in. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Rey.

      • #47 by reymos on November 21, 2010 - 2:52 PM

Thanks Tom for sharing this innovative way of connecting people around the world. Good luck on 12th Dec. My last weekend in California is a wet and bit cold experience…Im going back to UK on Monday after few months of hybernation!

        • #48 by Tom Baker on November 22, 2010 - 8:32 AM

Enjoy your time in the UK. Did you enjoy Cali? Thanks again for participating in the meme. I wish I knew how to get more folks involved. I still have a couple of weeks.

          • #49 by reymos on November 28, 2010 - 12:16 AM

Hi, Ive read your comment in Sundaystealing which my meme post was featured. I was surprised and I thought it was a spam! Anyway, hope this will help increase the number of people who will participate. I will try to share this thru my other community networks and I was bit busy during past days.

On the other hand, I did enjoy my 5-month stay in Riverside and visited some places, including Napa Valley and Las Vegas.

  20. #50 by mct88 on November 16, 2010 - 3:31 AM

I’m going to have to come back to this post and read entirely when its not midnight and I’m actually awake and not a zombie.

    • #51 by Tom Baker on November 16, 2010 - 7:22 AM

I understand. I was so tired last night I went to bed a 10:00. I think I made this more complicated than it needed to be. I hope you will be a part of this.

      • #52 by mct88 on November 23, 2010 - 3:38 PM

ok i think i got this… i repost the instructions right? and add my url to the master list then in december i actually write out answers to the questions… and visit 5 random blogs and comment?!

i know its taken me awhile to register lol

    • #56 by Tom Baker on November 9, 2010 - 1:44 PM

Glad to have you. I added your site to the master list!

  22. #57 by Mitchell Allen on November 3, 2010 - 5:24 PM

    Hi Tom,

Okay, so the few folks who have already posted something on their blogs have interpreted the rule title must be “Community Networking Meme” to mean the promotional post. So, what are we supposed to use for the 12/10/10 post title?

I want to get this done, but I don’t want to confuse my readers. Could you also look at my other questions, above?

    Thanks,

    Mitch

    • #58 by Tom Baker on November 3, 2010 - 8:15 PM

Sorry Mitchell. I promise to be better at getting to comments. I would prefer the repost to have the Community Networking Meme but the actual Dec. 12th post can have any name they want. Sorry I made this so complex.

      1. You should definitely change my site name to your site’s name in the rules.
      2. Linking to the master list is fine. It just seemed to me that people might be more apt to follow through if they could just open 5 new tabs instead of having to visit another site before follow through.
      3. I would prefer posting the entire post but reblogging is okay. Whatever gets people to participate is fine with me!

I’m not sure but I hope that answers all your questions and thanks for being involved. Take care Mitchell.

      • #59 by Mitchell Allen on November 3, 2010 - 9:41 PM

        Hi Tom,

No worries. Your house, your rules. I just want to get them straight :)

Your master list reasoning makes sense and, now that I think about it, even if it isn’t in sync, there will be at least five links on each participant’s 12/10/10 post.

So yes, I believe that’s everything. Thanks!

        Cheers,

        Mitch

  23. #60 by thatrandombitch on November 3, 2010 - 6:56 AM

Any chance I can get in on this??

    • #61 by Tom Baker on November 3, 2010 - 7:04 AM

Absolutely! Just copy and paste it into a post on your site and leave your web address on the master list. It would be great if you participated! Also remember when you post it on your site, to replace my site’s name with yours in the rules section.

  24. #62 by Quianna Kim on October 28, 2010 - 12:52 PM

I just started blogging today. I came across your site from an email I got from a co-worker. I’m not totally sure about the rules or even what a meme is but I would like to do this. I’m extremely shy and I’m trying to come out of my shell. I live in Indiana as well Tom.

    • #63 by Tom Baker on October 29, 2010 - 4:28 PM

Glad to have you Quianna. If there is anything you don’t understand about the rules, let me know. Happy blogging.

  25. #64 by PrinceConnoisseur on October 26, 2010 - 7:49 PM

Hey Tom, I just finished my answers and scheduled my post. I’m looking forward to how many people might participate.

    • #65 by Tom Baker on October 29, 2010 - 4:23 PM

I look forward to reading them in December.

  26. #66 by Mitchell Allen on October 26, 2010 - 4:47 PM

    Hello, Tom!
This is a great idea and I will do everything I can to help promote it. Count me in as I go off on a tangent:

The web of blog clusters has a Kevin Bacon Six Degrees of Separation quality that may surprise you. I never heard of you until ten minutes ago.
That’s when I opened up an email from T., over at TheLiminalState. Since I read her blog frequently, you and I ARE connected.
It’s just a matter of which of the two of us was going to have an idea for T. to spread.

It’s this tenuous thread that literally makes or breaks a meme. If we all ignored T., her thread would end with her dangling from your blog :)
However, the more of her readers that take up the challenge, the stronger her link grows with you.

SO, how did I get connected to T.? Through BloggerLuv.com. That’s one of the places where I will be sharing your meme idea, as soon as I understand all the rules :)
BloggerLuv was actually founded on the premise that bloggers sometimes feel alone out in their private, anonymous spaces.
It’s definitely something to consider if you want to give your meme a boost.

Anyway, your quest is noble and fun and I hope it spreads like wildfire.

    Cheers,

    Mitch

    • #67 by T on October 27, 2010 - 5:59 AM

Please don’t ignore poor T…..she’s really very nice. :)

    • #68 by Tom Baker on October 29, 2010 - 4:23 PM

      Hey Mitchell,

Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond. I am going to look into BloggerLuv. I think I looked into a site that is similar but my site name and some content would not permit me to join. I will have more time tonight and I will look into BloggerLuv. Thanks for the information and thanks for being a part of the meme. I also want to visit your site. Take care.

      • #69 by Mitchell Allen on October 30, 2010 - 10:47 AM

        Hi Tom,

Thanks! I haven’t checked for responses to my post on BloggerLuv yet, but hopefully, people are not too uptight about the name – we’re all adults, right?

I, too, have a couple of questions about the rules:
        1. Reblog – Is the way T. did it sufficient? She mention to one of her readers about a “reblog” button, but I don’t see it in Google Chrome.

        2. title must be “Community Networking Meme” does that mean the promotional post or the 12/12/10 scheduled post?

        3. If I’m republishing the rules, should I change the following:

You must agree that on December 12th you will visit at least five blog links that you have never visited before and leave a comment on their responses (my site, Morning Erection, not included). Replace my site with your site.

        to:

You must agree that on December 12th you will visit at least five blog links that you have never visited before and leave a comment on their responses (my site, Morpho Designs, not included). Replace my site with your site.

(This, of course, assumes that reblogging involves copying the rules)

        4. Finally, wouldn’t it be better to link to your master list of participants, rather than try to copy it? Everyone might not be in synch with the most up-to-date-links come 12/12/10.

The reason for all the questions is that, usually, memes are spread simply by linking back to the main source and posting just the rules. The complexity even for someone like me, means that it would overwhelm non-techies and possibly keep them from participating.

        Thanks!

        Cheers,

        Mitch

Tom, love this idea. Count me in to participate. I’ll be working on my answers and post them on my blog. Have a good one!

  33. #77 by Scent of my heart on October 20, 2010 - 4:36 PM

I’d love to participate too! Working now on other bloggers attending too! Hopefully will have some success, you know my blog is pretty new and you and Cherlyn are my only steady visitors, the rest change every day! But by 12.12.2010 I have time to organize something! Thank you Tom for sharing this!

    • #78 by Tom Baker on October 20, 2010 - 8:09 PM

Thanks, I was counting on you and Cherlyn to participate. If you just publicize it where other bloggers can see it, that is enough. I appreciate it.

Tom, Are you still interested in my poetry for the 27th? If so, where do I need to send the poem? Let me know one way or the other. Thanks!

    • #80 by Tom Baker on October 20, 2010 - 8:08 PM

Yes, Dawn there is room for two more poems and I did save a place for you. You can just send it to my email address. Thanks.

A great idea! I’d definitely love to participate, however, a lot of my readers aren’t bloggers :|…so I’ll try my best, but I’m not sure if I can get 10 other bloggers to participate lol

    • #82 by Tom Baker on October 20, 2010 - 8:06 PM

Ten other bloggers was just an example of what could happen. If you participate that is good. I just want those who are participating to publicize it on Twitter and Facebook, you know…

      • #83 by Cherlyn on October 21, 2010 - 4:03 AM

True enough. I’ll Tweet this post right now before I go off to work and my mind becomes mush! :)

Hey T, looking forward to what everyone posts and I thank you for wanting to participate. I’m hoping the sharing on sites like Twitter will get many more bloggers involved.

Tom – just re-posted this to my site – in process of putting it out there on all my social networks. I would love to see this thing take off. Really cool idea and a great tool for bloggers to network and connect.

        • #88 by Tom Baker on October 29, 2010 - 4:19 PM

Thanks T, I hope this does spread. I saw that someone from Xanga wants to be involved.
