The Avengers 3D: A Review

Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D, an international peace keeping agency. The agency is a who’s who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster. Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson star in The Avengers.

Even if you hate comic books. Even if you have never liked even one superhero movie before. Even if you like superhero movies and have never seen either of the two Iron Man movies,  Thor, either of the Hulk movies or Captain America. Even if you have no imagination whatsoever. The Avengers is everything you want in an action movie.

I am not good at writing reviews but… here goes.

This is the best superhero movie — EVER! There is no doubt in my mind. I used to think The Dark Knight was the best superhero movie and it still reigns supreme as far as story telling and character development but for pure action and comedy. It isn’t fair to compare the two movies because they are in two different leagues. I don’t expect this summer’s Dark Knight Rises to do much better that the success The Avengers is having because Bane is not a popular villain and I expect the wave of success to continue for Avengers. The success includes a $200 million dollar weekend box office as well as a worldwide total of $640 million. To put the success of the Avengers into perspective, the number two movie only made $8 million dollars. I don’t think anyone even watched any other movie this weekend!

For me, I did not enjoy either of the two Hulk movies at all. I didn’t like Ed Norton as Dr. Banner and I did not find anything to like about Eric Bana’s version. I was put off by the CGI but in The Avengers I did not mind at all. In fact Mr. Hulk has the best scene in the entire movie. I don’t want to spoil it for you but the movie is outright, roll on the floor, funny. There are plenty of one-liners and sarcastic remarks to go around from everyone including Agent Phil Colson, however the Hulk has the best single scene in this great movie and I guarantee you a good belly laugh all at Loki’s expense!

I saw The Avengers in 3D. This is one movie that should be seen in 3D especially the final battle between Loki’s army and our heroes. This is just a fun, good time, family movie. Entertainment at it’s best. There is an issue I have with how in one scene the Incredible Hulk is a raging lunatic and the very next time Bruce turns, he is in ‘control’ of the monster. Perhaps it is because the second time he caused himself to turn and the first time it was anger. I’m not sure there will be an answer to the question, but that is the only flaw with the film I found worth mentioning. If I were forced to find another issue I would say that even with the 155 minute run time, I left wanting more. I seriously could have sat through another hour and not complained that the movie was too long. I hope any sequels are just as enjoyable.

In terms of sheer numbers I think The Avengers has surpassed The Princess Bride for being the movie with the most memorable and repeatable quotes. One of my favorites is Captain America talking to Black Widow concerning their first encounter with self proclaimed thunder god Thor: “There is only one God ma’am. And I don’t think he dresses like that.”

I recommend The Avengers for anyone who wants to see a great action-packed, feel-good movie.  4.5 out of 5

Couldn’t agree more, Tom! I loved every bit of The Avengers! My favorite Avenger is Iron Man. :) #likeaboss HAHAHA :)) Can’t believe you just wrote a movie review here. :) Great job! (Sorry for so much comments, I’m catching up with my favorite blogger. :))

The single best movie EVER!!! I am torn now between marrying Johnny Depp or Robert Downey. The pains of life. This movie was great. I hate to sound so childish but because you loved the movie as much as me, I wish I could see it again with you. All the other bloggers who loved the movie too. That would be marvelous.

    • #4 by Tom Baker on May 16, 2012 - 6:34 AM

It does not sound childish or perhaps it does. If it does I am just as childish as you. I would love to meet and spend time with FWB (Friends Who Blog). It would be nice to meet and see such a great film.

The Avengers was awesome! I agree that it is the best comic book movie ever! I also agree that Mark Ruffalo is a better Bruce Banner than either Eric Bana or Edward Norton.

    • #9 by Tom Baker on May 13, 2012 - 6:16 AM

I was looking at Mark in another movie with Reese Witherspoon a few weeks ago and noticed he would make a great younger version of Peter Falk as Columbo. What do you thInk?

THIS WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE AWESOMEST MOVIES EVERRRRR. :D I really wanna watch this again, since I didn’t watch it in 3D the first time. Hihi. :> Hello, Tom! (Kinda guilty that it’s my first time on here.)

We all want to see this movie, but haven’t had the chance yet. For me is perfect, I get to see Captain America in one movie ;)

    • #18 by Tom Baker on May 11, 2012 - 11:53 AM

Captain America has a great line concerning The Wizard of Oz! The movie is really funny. Let me know what you think about it.

  7. #19 by Cherlyn on May 11, 2012 - 5:23 AM

Good review Tom! I want to see this, but I’ll probably wait until the cheap seats. I’m obligated to like this film because I’m a Joss Whedon fan, it’s in my nature lol :P

    • #20 by Tom Baker on May 11, 2012 - 11:52 AM

I know your connection to the great Whedon. Cheap seats with 3D? Please see it in 3D!

      • #21 by Cherlyn on May 14, 2012 - 8:45 AM

Ew no – 3D is a gimmick that never enhance story, good characters or the overall quality of a film. If it needs 3D to make it watchable, then I guarantee it won’t be a decent film. Films should be good enough to watch on their own.

        • #22 by Tom Baker on May 14, 2012 - 9:33 AM

I understand how you feel about the 3D and it really doesn’t need it but the fight scene at the end, I think was enhanced with the effects. Off to read your dare!

          • #23 by Cherlyn on May 14, 2012 - 10:11 AM

I hate spending the money to see 3D when I don’t even like it, I’ll probably see it in 2D. By the way, saw Cabin in the Woods – freaking awesome, soo funny. A really great black comedy

          • #24 by Tom Baker on May 14, 2012 - 10:15 AM

How about a review when your hiatus is over. You are the best at reviews – Saber and I cannot be both wrong and we agree you are the best at it.

          • #25 by Cherlyn on May 15, 2012 - 5:17 AM

Oh no, now I have expectations to meet :P Lol I was hoping to do a Prometheus review when I see it, so lets hope it happens :)

          • #26 by Tom Baker on May 16, 2012 - 6:40 AM

We’ve had expectations ever since you wrote your first review. You could get paid for it. I think I told you that before. Your reviews are so thorough. Prometheus is the next big movie for me. I hope you do write one.

          • #27 by Cherlyn on May 16, 2012 - 10:16 AM

            I’ll try :)

This movie was EXCELLENT. I watched it with my friend, but I want to go home and watch it with my brothers in IMAX (not sure if/when I’ll get the chance to do that though. Lines for IMAX will be CRAZY.) There was so much Ironman in it, I really enjoyed it. Felt like majority of the movie to me was Ironman fanservice haha I heard the Hulk movies weren’t that good also (I never watched them) but I liked Banner in this. Excellent review! It was an incredibly long movie though, felt as long as Dark Knight? I needed to use the bathroom for like half the movie but didn’t want to miss anything, so..

Can’t wait for Dark Knight Rises and I even hear there’s going to be an Ironman 3 :)

…Too bad Spidey wasn’t invited to the Avengers haha.

    • #29 by Tom Baker on May 11, 2012 - 11:50 AM

Yes an Iron Man III! I do want to see Dark Knight Rises even though I don’t like Bane. I must confess I do like Catwoman! Also, I wanted to personally thank you for this being my 7000th comment.

Love this review. Sounds like the perfect movie to get my husband out to with me. He’s about the action flick, and I am about him!

    • #31 by Tom Baker on May 9, 2012 - 9:16 PM

That is the nIcest thing I’ve heard a wife say about her husband in a long while. Make sure it is in 3D.

  10. #32 by Micah on May 9, 2012 - 8:31 AM

true! I’m not a fan of action hero movies either (just went to the movies upon the husband’s request) but surprisingly I liked it. very much that I was glued to my seat and on the big screen till the very end and yes even with the 155 run time, I did not get bored at all and in fact left me wanting for more. I love love the humor in this film. It also helps that all the superheroes are very pleasing to the eyes ;)

    • #33 by Tom Baker on May 9, 2012 - 9:12 AM

I know you are talking about the men but yes, Scarlett is a hottie! I’m glad I am not the only one who thinks it is the BEST.

Omg I saw this movie twice over the weekend. Im studying extra hard this week because my brother wants to go on Friday. I saw it both 3D and regular. I would’ve liked to see it in IMAX 3G though. Can’t wait for avengers 2!!! Disney just confirmed it today! So funny! Especially when captain America shares his excitement over getting the term flying monkeys :) I believe I was the only one in the theater that laughed out loud very hard.

    • #38 by Tom Baker on May 9, 2012 - 9:20 AM

I have not wanted to see a movie again right away since I watched Jurassic Park. I watched it over and over again taking all kinds of friends and family go with me. My mother hates movies like that but she like Jurassic Park so maybe I can get them to see this and when this comes out on DVD I should have a neighborhood movie night.
