This is not the post I originally had written for today. I wrote a post about Ronald Reagan replacing President Grant on the fifty dollar bill which you will read on the 13th.
I’m actually writing this with tears still falling from my eyes. Why are people so cruel to one another? Why do we hurt the ones we are supposed to love? And by supposed I mean, inherent, normal, instinctively, purposefully.
I just finished watching a movie called Precious. I know that Precious is just a movie but it got me to thinking. People treat each other even worse than what I saw in the movie and what adults get away with in the way we treat children is sometimes a crime. As I stated before, I was moved to tears many times during the movie. This is a crazy messed up world we live in. We pour out our hearts and open our wallets when nature destroys whole communities and that is great. What about human nature?
What about the nature of man? We are by far the most destructive force on this earth. I’m not talking about deforestation or pollution either. I’m talking about hatred and prejudice and gossip and strife and jealousy and mental and physical cruelty and abuse. I’m talking about the kind of destructive force that makes a person feel less than an animal because the words we speak or the deeds we do hurt our fellow man, our children, family and friends or even strangers.
Our thoughts and our tongues are perhaps more responsible and are to blame for more murders and deaths than tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanoes, tornadoes and earthquakes combined. The words we speak can murder the person we aim them at.
The words we speak are powerful and can kill a person’s spirit. The words we speak can and sometimes do affect a person for the rest of their life. We can never know the outcome of the words we speak. I looked for a quote on words and this is the best that I was able to find. It’s from the Bible. Religion and God have been coming up a lot lately in my life.
In the same way the tongue is a small part of the body, but it can brag about doing important things. A large forest can be set on fire by a little flame. The tongue is that kind of flame. It is a world of evil among the parts of our bodies, and it completely contaminates our bodies…
So I guess once again my parents were right when they told me and my sister, “If you don’t have something nice to say to someone, then don’t say anything.
I didn’t read the book and I don’t know how well the movie compares to the book. As far as I’m concerned none of that matters. Precious was a hard movie to watch and a harder pill to swallow, but it’s therapy perhaps we all need to endure. Rated R for child abuse including sexual assault, and pervasive language.
Love and peace my friends.
