Will Your “-” Matter?

Whether you call it a hyphen or a dash, will yours matter to anyone? Will anybody remember your hyphen? Will anyone care about your dash?

What hyphen am I talking about? The only thing that will ever mean anything to anyone concerning you is your hyphen. Your entire existence will be reduced to just a hyphen one day. No matter how long you live, no matter whether you were a good person or a bad seed. All that you have ever done when you die will be reduce to a hyphen. It will be on your tombstone. The day you were born and the day you die.

Everything else that you were able to accomplish in your existence here on earth will be condensed between those two dates in the form of a hyphen. What if anything will your – matter? Do you care? What will be your legacy and what would you like it to be? All that is you, all that you feel is so important will be trivialized in the form of a hyphen.

Let’s examine the hyphen of some prominent people.

Adolf Hitler (mass murderer, bigot)
April 20, 1889 April 30, 1945

Michael Jackson (entertainer, singer-dancer)
August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

Jesus Christ (rabbi, messiah)
0 B.C. – 0 A.D. or 4 B.C. – 33 A.D.

Marilyn Monroe (entertainer, actress)
June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962

Mary Ann Cotton (serial killer)

Bruce Lee (actor, martial arts expert)

You (work in progress)
Your birthdate – ?

It’s your hyphen. What are you going to do with it or perhaps just as important, what have you done thus far? I can guarantee the sun will rise tomorrow, however I cannot guarantee you will rise with it. Make the most of your life and try to do so by helping others.
