30 Days Of Blogging Honesty: Day 16

A bit of housecleaning before today’s post…

I don’t know about anyone else but this has been a real challenge. It is great to see more than half of the month gone already. I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone better and just getting to know those I did not know before the challenge.

If you took part in last December’s meme and want to take part in the two this year, I need your two questions for the meme. If you have already submitted them, thank you. I will be posting the questions for the July meme sometime in May. It gives you two full months to complete you answers.

If you did not participate in last year’s meme we would love for you to join. To see what all the hubbub is about visit last year’s answers here or last year’s explanation here. Submit your two questions via my contact page and not in the comment section. I need at least twenty bloggers from December’s meme to contribute questions or I will be forced to come up with my own. Insert evil, blood curdling laugh… now.

Oh, and there will be a little twist to the dares. I will reveal all on April 24th. Stay tuned.

I’ve just been granted the power of resurrection but I can only use it to bring back one dead celebrity. I would bring back ________ because…

Wait, can I pretend to suffer from delusions of grandeur and think myself a celebrity and when I die, bring myself back?

This question sucks because I cannot think of a good answer. Well it might be good but not perfect. Here is my dilemma. I thought about Whitney Houston. If I bring her back to sing once again to the world, will she do drugs again and kill herself? If I bring Michael Jackson back will he continue being addicted to the drugs he was on? If I were to bring Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, or Elvis Presley, back would they continue doing the drugs and drinking too? Bringing someone back to life to continue along the destructive lifestyle that probably led to their downfall would just be selfish and inconsiderate on my part.

Any celebrity in torment in hell would probably want to come back but anyone in heaven would most likely kill me for bringing them back. I’m not ready to die, but like they say, “No good deed goes unpunished!”

I really hate to admit this but there are far more ‘celebrities’ I would rather remove from here than there are that I would bring back. For the record, William Powell, Claude Rains, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Teena Marie and Princess Diana were all under consideration. I am very fond of classic cinema as you can see from my choices.

So I am once again come full circle. The better question to ask me is who I would rather have to leave us. Awful I know and not at all my normal thought process. For the answer though, look on most any reality television show.  BUT, I don’t actually want anyone to die.

Since I have to choose someone and I got away with straying from the choices yesterday, I will pick Merv Griffin. He created my all time, well not all time (I really enjoyed Weakest Link too) favorite game show Jeopardy.

31 Days Of Blogging Honesty: Day 29

I just created a mixed CD for someone who had been deaf all their life. The 15 artists and songs I chose are…

I could not possibly even pretend to know what it would be like; the joy, the overwhelming fear and awe in hearing your first sound after being deaf for a lifetime. I think after they listened to my CD I would want them to hear James Earl Jones too. Here is my list:

Concerto #21 – Mozart
Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
Dangerously In Love – Beyoncé
Portuguese Love – Teena Marie
Torna A Surriento – Placido Domingo
God (instrumental) – Prince
Yesterday – The Beatles
Unforgettable – Nat King Cole
Tainted Love – Soft Cell
A House Is Not A Home – Luther Vandross
Break Of Dawn – Michael Jackson
Do Re Mi – Julie Andrews
I’m Alright – Kenny Loggins
I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston
You Got Another Thing Coming – Judas Priest

If there was room for another song I would have to include O’ Holy Night by Yolanda Adams. I think there is a nice sample of some of my favorites. As I thought of the songs to include it reminded me of when Commander Data first tasted a drink in Ten Forward and he didn’t like it. He had just put in his emotion chip and even though he hated what he was drinking he drank it all and asked for more. I imagine the person listening to my taste in music might have a similar reaction.

If you’ve never seen the scene I’m talking about, please watch it. It’s only 56 seconds and significantly explains how some people feel about my musical taste until it grows on them!

Tomorrow is Saturday. It’s time for another guest post segment. Saber Hodson is my special guest this month and you will be happy to know her post is about Syphilis. I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself all manner of things. No, she’s not a doctor or ill herself! Just come back tomorrow to have your curiosity satiated.

To Teena Marie, Alia Rose And My Sister Terri: Thank You

God bless Teena Marie & her Family! Sending Blessings & prayers. I was just sayin that Fire & Desire is 1 of the most beautifully performd songs! Once a beautiful song, always a beautiful song! Certain songs just have that “THING”! What a SANGIN Lady! Fire & Desire ~ Alicia Keys

Three days ago one of my favorite singers died. Nicknamed the Ivory Queen of Soul, Teena Marie passed away in her sleep on December 26th. When I was five years old, Teena’s song called Lovergirl was a huge hit with my sister. I remember her dancing and singing to that song night and day. I didn’t know it at the time but my sister wasn’t/isn’t a good singer. Teena however is a different story.

The album was Starchild and the year was 1984. Born Marie Christine Brockert and a protege of Rick James, Teena’s voice led me to believe she was a Black woman. I had no idea. She’s the funkiest, (of course, Rick James), soulful-est woman I know. You might never have heard of Teena before today but her lyrics are one of the reason I love poetry so much. How this singer/songwriter/arranger/composer never won a Grammy Award, let alone any other awards is mind blowing. She was nominated for four Grammy awards.

She died at age 54 of what is being called natural causes. She leaves behind one daughter, Alia Rose. She had a huge influence on the life of Lenny Kravitz. Watch his video on YouTube of when he first heard the news.

Since Lovergirl, I have collected all of her albums and I love them all. My favorite Teena Marie song though is one of the duets she did with funkmaster Rick James entitled Fire & Desire. There was a campaign earlier this year to get Teena Marie a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to no avail. Perhaps now in death she will be recognized for her vocal accomplishments in her life. Below are the poetry/lyrics to one of the many favorites songs by Lady Tee a.k.a. Teena Marie.

Irons In The Fire

People say I’ve got my hands in too many things
Keeping time with paupers just as well as kings
I toss my hat up to the silver sky
And then I sigh
Look at all the blessings in my life

Here I am your Piscean holocaust
Born in Venice Harlem with some sweet and sour sauce
I close my eyes and still somehow I feel
You’re here with me
And you are such a blessing in my life

Here I am, I’m just a fragment of my God
Heavenly father, hear me
Sometimes life gets so hard
With you as my desire
Spirit’s gonna build me higher
I’ve got to keep my irons in the fire
Got to keep my irons in the fire

I will miss my girl Teena Marie, Real music by real people. God bless my sistah and her family. U will be missed.   ~ Sheila E.

On Saturday January 1, 2011, New Years Day, Iris Orpi will be guest blogging. Her blog is Cognac For The Soul. I would stress upon you the mistake you would be making if you missed the opportunity to visit her site before her post goes live on Saturday. I can assure you, you will enjoy reading her writings.
