Where The Heart Doth Shine…

Such ill in the world today: poverty, war, violence and more. We’ve asserted ourselves as the dominant species on the planet and through our actions and our greed for more, everything is decaying. What right are we given when we disregard the things that are most precious to us? We act with malice and cruelty sometimes, that I can’t but think that karma is punishing us. But are we monsters like this? Sure enough we make grave mistakes and let our sins (in non-christian terms) influence us, but I believe when it comes down to the soul that we can do the right thing. As I type here people are dying to disease, natural disasters, war or some other unfortunate circumstance. However, there are some of us that look for the good inside ourselves and help the desperate and the defenseless in their times of need when they want someone to just make things better. Charities and organizations from across the world dedicate their time and their passion for life in order to help those places, people and creatures that need them the most. Offering aid and supplies to those struck by floods or earthquakes… to those who are widows of our brave soldiers fighting in foreign countries… to restoring wildlife and habitats across the globe. In my mind and heart, these wonderful people do not get the recognition, the appraisal or the help that they deserve, since they are what keep us humans well… human. Here are some that I believe deserve some recognition for their brilliant efforts.

Convoy of Hope:

A non-profit organization, who have helped more than 37 million people in poor, deprived or disaster stricken countries and places such as El Salvador, Kenya and even Haiti when the earthquake hit.

“What We Do : At Convoy of Hope our goals are to provide help and hope to people in need in the United States and around world through our children’s  feeding initiatives, community outreach, disaster response and partner resources.”

Truly brilliant organization, especially after looking at their website. They have helped people in 46 states in America over 109 different countries across the world. Just viewing their website, which is very impressive and compelling to see vast and varied activity/project reports which is encouraging and pleasing to my mind.

British Red Cross:

A humanitarian organization, led by faithful and dedicated volunteers from across Great Britain and Ireland, but the great thing about this charity, is that they help more than just Britain and Ireland… they help third-world countries in preparing for disasters, and helping heal communities after the disaster has struck. Not only that, they take initiatives in refugee services, teaching deprived countries and helping protect people involved in armed conflicts across the globe using International Humanitarian Law and operate under the rules of the Geneva Convention. They take great pride and privilege in helping others and I’m thankful there are people like these helping out those who can’t even sustain themselves.

Those two organizations are some of the most popular and hard-working charities in the world. Yeah it’s great seeing groups of people come together to become brilliant. But what about the common people? The average, every-day people… we can do great things too to help another. I recently browsed through the internet, looking for inspiring stories when I came across a website that was a bank for local savior stories which have been gathered from varied sources. It wasn’t just stories of local saviors… it was children… children, saving people’s lives! I knew that my heart was melting as I was reading through some of the news and it just puts adults to shame. I have stated my opinion that most of the world is harsh and cruel and raised the question that if we deserve to be where we are, I am then rightly corrected by these courageous children.

One story, a 7-year-old boy called Jordan Wyman was a cub scout who saved a baby from drowning in a pool. A quote from the boy said:

“The water was going up over his eyes, so I went over, picked him up and took him to his daddy,” Jordan later recounted.

Noble, yet strong and kind-hearted… what can I say?

Another story of a 6-year-old girl called Abby, saved her grandfather’s life after he had a diabetic reaction, by calling emergency services. She did this with calm and ease, as her grandfather Terry was a nurse and taught her what to do just in case. She then did her best to make her grandfather relaxed until the emergency crew arrived. One thing about this story struck me in particular and it was the grandfather’s response:

“She’s my guardian angel,” said grandfather Terry.

I was at the point of sympathy and shedding a tear for that. Simple, yet sweet and affectionate.

The children of this generation make me proud, right down to my core. There may be evil in the world, but when young and innocent children do noble things to save another person’s life, then the human race is redeemable. It’s the charities and children like these that do me proud and move me in ways that emotions don’t normally move and I feel the will to give back and do good myself after hearing inspiring stuff like this.

I’m now going to go back to my questions I mentioned earlier and provide my opinion. NO! We are not monsters of the planet and we are all not horrible and malicious. I genuinely believe that we are great creatures and we are redeemable, if we look within ourselves for the beautiful person we can all be. We read fantasy stories when we were kids, or when our parents read to us and we often wonder where the heroes in our modern-day are. Well it’s not a question of who CAN be a good person, but DO WE WANT TO be a great person? In my heart, these are good people… not just good people… they are heroes who bring out the honorable in us as a race.
