CHICAGO << HARPO STUDIOS >> My sources have confirmed (I’ve always wanted to say that), that Oprah Winfrey is calling it quits sometime in 2011. She has been a fixture in millions of homes for more than 24 years and she deserves a break.
Yes, I’m a guy who watches Oprah. I watch her whenever her topics and or guests appeal to me. I don’t watch her just because she is on everyday. I watched when she first introduced the world to Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen. I recently saw the brothers Jackson comment on Michael’s This Is It film. The show I think I remember most is the tribute she did for Black women, young and old who made it possible for her to be who and where she is. The younger generation of Black women who can achieve so much more than she did because of the older generation. I watched as Alicia Keys, and Gabrielle Union paid respect to women like Maya Angelou, Gladys Knight and Cicely Tyson. It’s both amazing and pitiful that there is a need for such a show.
I watched Oprah tackle tough subjects like incest, drugs, prejudice and weight loss. I saw the show when Oprah yelled, “You get a car, and you get a car, and you get a car!” After 25 years there are far too many to remember. I respect Oprah Winfrey far more than most. She didn’t take the Maury Povich route, she never went Jerry Springer and she honored the man, Phil Donahue who owned the number one spot when Oprah first started. Others have come and gone, Sally Jesse Raphael and Rosie O’Donnell to name a few but Oprah has remained true to herself and true to her audience.
Oprah plans to make the announcement today live on her show. The Oprah show is shown in 145 countries worldwide and an estimated 42 million viewers a week watch here in the United States.
Don’t be discouraged though. It has been speculated that Ms. Oprah will start a new talk show on her newly formed Oprah Winfrey Network. It is a venture with the Discovery Channel. Don’t worry about Oprah’s bank accounts either. She worth 2.5 billion according to Forbe’s magazine and has earned 275 million this year alone, helped by Harpo Studios production of The Oprah Show, Dr. Phil Show, The Rachel Ray Show and most recently, my favorite The Doctor Oz. show. I think Oprah should end her last show in 2011 by saying, in the words of the Terminator, “I’ll Be Back!”
How many of you read those three words with Arnold’s accent?

I want to add to my comment that I admire her generosity to help people who need it. I know it is tax deductible but that doesn’t matter. She is still giving to the people who need it. Why does she shout so much? She could be the barker in the circus and it is annoying to see her out of control when she introduces someone. Doesn’t anyone talk to her about these things?

I think it is time for Oprah to go. The show seems to be all about her. When a celebrity appears she tells us she is “close friend”. These celebrities appear stunned but go along with her. When her production appeared on broadway, she sat in the audience and sang along with the performers. It disturbed all sitting within hearing distance. When her friend told her she was annoying others, she replied, “it’s my name appearing on the neon lights”, I have the right to do what I want.” Her money does not permit her to be rude and inconsiderate of the members of the audience who have paid $200.00 or more for a ticket to hear the cast of the show perform. She should know better. She does lots of unthinking things on her show. Someone should tell her to host the show and leave herself out of personal comments.

Late to reply, but I don’t get the Oprah-hating bandwagon at all. She was quite the trailblazer for entertaining and inspirational day-time TV without compromising and selling out.
As far as her 25-year run talk show being an “American issue”, I have to say that Ms Winfrey has been one of our country’s BEST examples of someone living “The American Dream”, so I definitely think this is an important and relevant current issue.

My mom and I watched Oprah all throughout my high school years and I never stopped. Instead of teaching me about the birds and bees, I learned what I knew from Oprah. I learned how really bad the world can be and how really good some people can be. Through adversity, people can really shine.
I don’t like how Oprah spiritualizes God by calling him a higher power instead of him just being God, but I guess to please all people… I wish you the best in future endeavors.

This is terrible news. I love Oprah and always wanted to go to the show. You’re right – she’s great at what she does.

No way, can’t be true. What am I gonna do after school. Oh never mind, I’ll be a graduate! I hope she continues on that new network.
