Day 01 — The one thing that it seems like everyone else on the planet is into but I just cannot stand is…
Twitter. I don’t understand it. I don’t like the idea of it. It just makes no sense to me. Perhaps some of that hatred or misunderstanding of Twitter is that I wasn’t the one who thought of it. I think mostly though that telling people every insignificant detail of my mundane life or reading about someone else seems stupid.
I am not calling the people who use Twitter stupid. I simply don’t understand it and if anybody, some body would like to enlighten me, I would appreciate it. Twitter has been around for quite a few years now and I have always felt this way, but. I felt the same way about texting until I got a phone that was easy on the eyes and fingers and saw how convenient texting was when placing a call was inappropriate or not allowed.
I’m open for debate on the pros and cons and lots of people have asked me to join but no thanks.

Twitter Pros:
It makes communication is Easy
It gives you live feeds of what’s happening at your place, even around the world
It gives you an opportunity to meet, greet or rather tweet famous people (shallow, I know!)
Twitter Cons:
Privacy can be invaded
Bashers will drive you insane, and will test your patience and faith
it can get addicting
I guess it just boils down to this: Responsible using of this application and Respect peoples choices

On Twitter:
Every social media outlet gives the users a different way to post content, share content, connect with other peopler and have conversations.
Twitter = microblog.
Twitter is a social media outlet and it’s super pared down. The character limit keeps all of the posts very short (140 characters) and thus the conversation is quick, fast and to the point. The profiles are very minimalist as well. There’s not a lot of fanfare, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot of content.
It’s a “microblog” because of the character limit keeps it micro; individual users post text on all kinds of subject matter – the posts are all affiliated with the users account and appear listed in chronological order just as most blogs do. There aren’t any categories or other methods of categorizing really. There are different ways of using Twitter though.
You can post images, videos, locations, and other non-text content in the form of links.
You can opt to get private direct messages. Your username is called a “handle.” All tweets are public and may even be accessible after you’ve deleted it from your own feed (they’re always out there).
Twitter = the platform itself
Tweet = the post you make,140 character or less
Tweeting = the act of making posts
follow = twitter’s version of “friending” – you can opt to lock this option and thus screen people who will follow you
feed = the real time log of tweets; you can view the public all-Twitter feed, just the people you follow, every individual user has their own feed; feeds are public
At, Tag, Mention = various terms used for the in-tweet inclusion of another user’s handle – the post will appear on the feeds of everyone mentioned properly
The amazing aspect of Twitter is the richness of the data. You can “tag” any other user by using the @ + his or her handle. (it’s where FB got the idea). By placing the # symbol in front of a word (or phrase/word group without any spaces) you can create a functional “hashtag.” You can “retweet” someone else’s tweet and re-post what they’re written, links, tags and all. You can star tweets you like to make them easier to find retroactively and to mark its significance.
All of the mentions, tags, and hashtags are live data identifiers. All of the posts can be traced and tracked by these.
Example: You can use the hashtag #Shop4Siloam for the charity food drive my company is doing today (Siloam Mission is the homeless shelter we’re collecting money and food for). So if I search on Twitter for “#Shop4Siloam” every post that’s used that hashtag will all be listed, chronologically in its own feed. It’s how you can join a conversation or keep track of other convos happening.
#Hashtags are created for events, TV shows, holidays, political ideas, sayings… basically, anything that you’d want to use to track a type of post, you can turn it into a hashtag to make all related posts searchable.
#SuperBowl #AmericanIdol #ImLovinIt #OccupyWallSt #FF (follow friday) #TWSS (that’s what she said) … there are MILLIONS of hashtags.
All the data becomes sortable, trackable… “trends” form based on the most popular hashtags at any given time.,
Become of how you can sort by so many factors, Twitter becomes extremely useful. I can follow every tweet made with a specific hashtag and thus read what people all over the world are saying about something.
“Live Tweeting” is when you tweet during an event or a tv show in real time. So many shows feature hashtags on the screen – the program is encouraging you to tweet along with other viewers and you can talk about the show with all kinds of people. Big network prime time shows will get millions of tweets during an episode (like the X Factor or Dancing with the Stars, for example). People from the show will often tweet too – the judges on reality shows, the cast members, the network.
The “Real Housewives” always tweet during their shows and they like to defend themselves or explain the drama going on. In fact, tweeting and talking on Facebook about Real Housewives episodes became so popular that Bravo has a live after show 5 nights a week and viewers and stars alike use social media to talk about the latest shows with the host (Andy Cohen) and the particular guests he’s featuring that night.
Watching TV and simultaneously using social media to talk about the TV show, look up supplemental info (example: using imdb to find the name of an actor or other shows he’s been in) is called “second screen.” so many people browse online via their smartphones, tablets, and/or computers WHILE watching TV that there’s a name for it. businesses are cashing in on it too – encouraging participation in second screen convos to bolster enthusiasm for a show.
all kinds of software platforms are dedicated to searching twitter to find specific mentions. if you’re responsible for a brand or a public figure, you likely utilize these tools to see where your name is being mentioned on twitter. they can tell you so much as who is mentioning you, where geographically the mentions come from, give you context, frequency, and sentiment. it’s a great way for companies to know what the public is saying about them. check out “monitter” for an example of twitter monitoring.
I was once trying to catch a BoltBus from NYC China Town to Philly and the bus wasn’t at the pick up location I went to… it was a huge hassle and i bitched about it on twitter. someone from BoltBus’ customer service was scanning twitter looking for their name and within minutes BoltBus tweeted me asking what happened, gave me their cust serv 800 number and offered to help me work out my drama. many companies are using twitter + monitoring tools to amend customer service lapses.
I could go on, but this is OBSCENE.

i guess on a personal level i sometimes find it to be more work than it’s worth; it seems like it’s more dramatic and crazier than FB… it’s hard to keep up with it.
but when it comes to professional use, business, it’s amazing. it makes no sense to avoid social media, especially twitter, from any brand/business POV.

Ah, the illustrious Twitter. I started using it strictly to follow breaking news + world events from non-mainstream sources, dope people (like artists, journalists, activists, spiritual leaders, progressive financial advisors I actually respect, etc.) In that way it has been truly priceless. BUT, there are tons of twitter-philes who are only about being “followed” and “following back”…and unfortunately have tons to say, but it may not be relevant to your needs and motivations. It is more private than FB and simpler – if you just want pertinent, briefly written info. – Twitter works! And, I agree with your overall view, it took me until last year to decide that I wanted to, and how I wanted to use it. Even then, I take hefty breaks!
You get good at blocking people who are just trolling, and you can privatize your tweets, if you tweet somewhat regularly, but aren’t interested in “mass open distribution” of your ideas.
Definitely not recruiting! ~ Just sayin’

I have a love/hate relationship with twitter. :)
I signed up around June 2010 while doing a search on a certain subject and then Bam! I stumbled upon flirtry, naughty, kinky twitter. lol
It’s fun and I have met some cool people that I am honored to call friends now. My dislike comes from the time you waste when you are in there replying to people. Before you know it two hours have passed. :-/

I love twitter! Not really sure there’s anything I can say to convince you otherwise, but that’s completely fine.
To me twitter is often the easiest way to get in touch with someone. It’s so much less intimidating than email or even blog comments. You just ask your question and usually in less than an hour you get an answer all in 140 characters or less. :)

I have a Twitter account, but I rarely use it. I opened it mainly so I could inform people when I publish a blog post, but since I’ve been slightly brain dead when it comes to blogging, my twitter hasn’t been tweeting!!
The thing I’m not into, and never have been into, is Facebook. After being a teacher for 16 years I sort of got used to keeping my private life as private as I could. Even though I’ve never had anything negative to hide, I’ve known people who have gotten in trouble for comments on their Facebook page being misinterpreted.

haha I use a Twitter to stalk my favorite video game companies, CVS, the entire Spongebob cast, and Yoda. Sometimes contests/sweepstakes are put up and even though I’m too lazy to try for any of them, it’s nice to know that I have a chance since I’m on the medium haha. I don’t tweet all that much and since I don’t have too many followers I can usually tweet jokes or something cryptic and I won’t get bombarded like on facebook (which I am not on anymore). So it’s good for piece of mind or just having bite sized conversations with my close friends.

I was in Love with Twitter for a while because I used it to rant about my everyday life, but then I was twitter stalked and everyone wanted to know if I was ranting or raving about them. Needless to say I don’t care for twitter anymore. The constant contact with the world is getting to me. I barely fb or twitter anymore.

Oh, I have a Twitter, and I absolutely cannot tell you why I use it. Maybe because everyone else is….I dunno. It is a bit stupid in some ways, I dunno, it’s kind of fun talking about random crap without having to explain myself. No one listens when I talk about random crap in my day-to-day life, I might as well tweet it haha. I can understand why it makes no sense, it is a bit trivial :)

I don’t understand why people think other people care what little thoughts pop in their heads and what the hell is a hashtag? I find it infuriating when the news reports that some politician tweeted a response to some world/national crisis. What Sarah Palin tweets is not news.

This is a great post for the challenge, Tom.
I do not twitter or text. I don’t even Facebook as of this week.
I haven’t seen any real reason for them all except – as you said – to inform someone during
hours that are in appropriate to contact them. I miss the old fashioned – sorry about dating myself –
way of contatcing people. Like through a nice birthday card in the mail instead of a post on FB; or
a letter in the mail from someone who you haven’t seen or heard from. Getting them was exciting.
We’ve become very isolated even with all of these technologies. ~~~~ ; – O

Nice question to propose those who are partaking in the challenge. It sounds like one of the last steps for those who are in alcoholic anonymous. My daughter, who has been sober for 8 years now, was at that stage and wrote me that letter. We’ll see if it helped her. Curious to see how many people will be answering that one and not the alternate question. Pity I am vacationing this month. I would have enjoyed these challenges. Next time …. ~~~~~ : – )

I really like Twitter. It took me a long time to get it. I came and went with it. Mostly I follow people who are in the areas that I am interested in – writing, acting, art, parenting. I follow far more people now than I could ever keep up with, but whenever I log on and scroll through the recent tweets, I ALWAYS find something of interest – either something that makes me laugh, or a link to something interesting, or a bit of news I hadn’t heard about, or someone asking a question that I am able to answer. I’ve learned who are the people who tweet a lot of drivel (in my opinion anyway!), and rather than unfollow them, my eyes just naturally skip over their tweets. I think you have to be following quite a lot of people to really start appreciating what it has to offer.
I like the little random exchanges you can have with strangers on there – and if somebody you admire (celebrity or otherwise), retweets something you have said, or replies directly to you about something, it can make you feel all warm and fuzzy for a while!
On average, I just send about one tweet a day (more if I’m commenting or responding to other people’s), and I try and only say something that I think will be interesting or funny. I certainly wouldn’t just say something like “I’ve just had a nice cup of coffee”. Also, it’s another way to promote what you are doing, by linking to your blog or whatever.
I think I’ve gone on long enough now haven’t I, haha.

Twitter is an outlet for me and a great way to connect with friends that I don’t see often or are from other countries. I don’t particularly find it stupid to post whatever thought or mundane activity I am doing because frankly, the purpose of the “FOLLOW” button allows people to NOT listen or read or hear about the color of the shirt my cat wore today. “UNFOLLOW” button provides people free will and the opportunity to stop hearing or reading about how I bent over backwards to scratch my behind.. LOL
THe beauty of Twitter is the fact that it is MICROblogging… it is Facebook without the baggage and packages..LOL It’s like quick blog post and I guess the real challenge is how to be creative with the 140 characters…
And, it allows people to actually get in touch with movie stars they like and actually interact.. :) HAHAH
Twitter is fine by me… At least, most of the people I follow are my friends and I know them personally…So, if I cannot text them or call them or whatnot, I can always tweet them and zooom… update!
But yeah, there are some people who just don’t understand it or get it [my grandmother is among them] and that’s natural… whatever floats our boat right? to each his own… :D

I guess it’s bet to understand or look at Twitter using a marketing or advertising angle… The quickest and most interesting quick posts or one liners get the lion’s share of the social media marketing biz ü it’s fast paced- short and in real time… So i guess that’s one of its appeals ü

I can understand that but still not interested. I do have something up my sleeve and if my friend who is involved with the idea wants to tweet to the world about it, I will not stand in her way!!!

Imagine twitter as a teeny tiny blogosphere. That is really what it is. You spend time on your thoughts and are able to turn them in stories. People who tweet use one liners. Just like blogging, you choose whose life you want to read about. You choose who you think has awesome thoughts. And just like blogging, you may find people that you have so much in common with. Don’t completely switch off to it. Xx

Twitter doesn’t make sense to me either. I am fairly adept at emailing. I can even ‘skype’, but ‘twitter’?

I don’t like twitter much either, haven’t used my account for a long time. Not my thing either. Maybe it is useful when there is a catastrophy somewhere?

That would be a great way for people to get in contact with a loved one in a catastrophe. I agree with that but I would have to have the account set up ahead of time. Too bad.

This would be my answer too. I have all the same reasons as you do. I tried it once but never really understood it. It was messy, I thought. Last night, I was at a bridal shower and the bride-to-be had two of her Twitters friend show up. That was interesting. They talked about their Twitter friendship. I said I don’t have Twitter. They’re like, you’re missing half of your life. I said, I just don’t understand it. They said, you’re probably not talking to the right people. I said, Do you have WordPress?

You walk down to a stream – you look in it streaming past, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. You see your mirrored wavy distorted reflection, and those of the sky and trees behind you. You try to touch it. It feels cool and drips off you when your you lift your hand out. You cannot hold it. And every moment is full of the stream of life passing. This is twitter, an artform of life.
